We are in the process of tracing our history and adding new material to this page as and when we find it. If you can help us with the history of the 9th Bracknell Scout Group especially with dates and photo's please contact us using the contact button on the left. Thank you to Irene Gallacher ( one of our founder members ). Heather Friend and Patricia Styles at the Scout Association Info Centre for their help with the information on this page. The Group was formed in the fast growing Bracknell New Town, it was originally based in the Hanworth estate meeting in Schools and later spread to Birch Hill when the estate was built. The Group was formally known as the 1st Hanworth Scout Group until it was first registered 31st May 1974 when it was then known as the 9th Bracknell ( Hanworth ) Scout Group, it was renamed the 9th Bracknell ( South Hill ) Group in March 1976. The name change was due to the new Birch Hill estate being built on the borders of Hanworth, both estates were built on South Hill Parks grounds. The group started with a single Cub Pack meeting at the Pines Infant School on Tuesday evenings, the Hanworth Pack was run by Ron Carter and assisted by Irene Gallacher with the Scout Troop starting later. The first Group Scout Leader was Don Maunder. The Cub Pack had such a large waiting list due to the influx of families to the New Town that the Pack was divided into two, they were the Falcons which are still running today and still on Tuesdays and the Eagles.
Eagle Cub Pack, 1974 - 1975 In the early days the Group were meeting in three different schools on the estates and at one time had 2 Beaver Colony's, 4 Cub Packs and 2 Scout Troops. We are trying to find out the relevant dates and order of all the sections. Group Camp at Bears Rail Campsite, Windsor, 12 - 14th May 1989
Today we meet in our HQ which was built on the Leppington site in 1993, we have the Kinfisher and Kestrel Beaver Colony's, the Falcon and Merlin Cub Packs and the Harrier Scout Troop ( East and West Troops merged in 1996 ).
