Beaver Lodge Camp, September 2003
CAMP REPORTS
When we went to camp we had to put the tents up. Then we went and invaded the scouts and we lost. Tea was delicious and then to sleep, I couldn’t get to sleep until 5 am. We were going to have a plan the next day to build a dam-we made two.
We went for a big walk later on, I bought an owl and ice cream and sweets. We had a treasure hunt, we had to find 20 clues but there was a black panther loose so we had to be careful. I hurt my ankle. We had a bonfire and we
sang songs. We were all asleep straight away. We lost on points but it was close. On the way back home I played Top Trumps, Turn War and 11’s, Spot the ‘Yellow Car’, I also needed the toilet. I lost my jumper.
Tent 2 were the
best!

For the camp we
stayed in the Forest of Dean. The first day we were
meant to go on a 13 mile hike but we couldn’t because
Connor sprained his ankle. So we went to Symond’s
Yat rock instead. There was a brilliant view!
The second day
we went on a nature trail, we saw the Giant Chair,
The Stairs to Nowhere, later on in the day we went
on a nature trail. My favourite thing was seeing
two water bats.

Some bits of the
camp were fun and some were boring. I liked playing
in the stream and building dams. The food was very
nice and the hiking was boring. Out of 10 I would
give this camp 6

Friday - We arrived
at cub camp and started putting up the tents in
our groups. Then we had a wide game where two groups
hid and one group tried to find them, each person
was worth 1 point, 3 points, 5 points or 10 points
but your people weren’t worth anything. After the
wide game Tent 2 won, Tent 1 came second and Tent
3 came last. Then we went back to the hut to find
pasta and meatballs, then we got sent to bed.
Saturday - When
we woke up we treated ourselves to a full english
which gave us energy to collect firewood. Then we
went on a hike and Akela bought us ice cream, after
that we went on a nature walk. Then we went back,
had a camp fire and then went to bed.
Sunday - We went

This is what really happened.
Day 1
We left Bracknell
about 20 minutes late 2 mini buses, 2 cars and a
trailer. After the initial spell of heavy traffic
around Reading we all made steady progress and finally
arrived at Beaver Lodge in the Forest of Dean at
7pm. The cubs the helped the leaders put up the
tents before it got too dark. After the tents were
up Bagheera arranged a wide game in the field behind
the Camp Site. After this we all went into Beaver
Lodge itself and had our dinner - Meatballs with
pasta followed by doughnuts very nice!! Then it
was time for bed not sure which tent group got to
sleep first as they were all talking merrily at
2am.
Day 2

Well the cook was up around 6.30 to start preparing breakfast,
the cubs started to appear around
7am. We all sat down to breakfast at 8 cereals followed
by a full English breakfast sausage, bacon, beans,
tomatoes, hash browns and scrambled egg - a good
start to the day. The cubs then washed up. This
was followed by Flagbreak and tent inspection. The
cubs were then sent off to search for firewood for
the camp fire , it was during this that Connor twisted
his ankle in the stream. It was decided that he
should go to the local casualty department to be
checked over. In view of this we revised our plans
and went on a much shorter hike to some local ponds.
Once we arrived at Cannop Ponds everyone was treated
to a ‘99’. We then returned to Beaver Lodge to find
that Connor had also returned and that nothing was
broken he made full use of Akela’s walking pole!
We then had lunch. Everyone then climbed into the
mini buses etc and we went to Symond’s Yat and saw
the River Wye from above. The local shop did a roaring
trade in owls, ice creams and sweets. We then returned
to Beaver Lodge for dinner Roast Beef, yorkshire
pudding and veg followed by Apple crumble and custard.
After the cubs had washed up we all walked up to
the Nagshead Nature Reserve where Jamie from the
RSPB took the cubs on a wide game through the reserve
they had to find 20 clues in order to get to some
treasure at the end. Of course we found the treasure!
It was then back to Beaver Lodge where Akela had
lit the Camp fire which was blazing well by the
time the cubs got back. After ‘Charlie had a Pigeon’,
‘Alice the Camel’, ‘Hello my names Joe’ and many
more we finished the camp fire and then went in
for hot chocolate and biscuits and then bed.
Day 3
They must have
been tired 7.30 and not many boys about. But by
9 o’clock they had eaten cereals and a full breakfast
and done the washing up. It was then time for flag
break followed by Cubs Own led by Hathi. We then
took advantage of the dry weather and packed away
all the patrol tents then the leaders tents. Then
after a drink and biscuits we set off for the last
challenge of the camp. We arrived at the Sculpture
Trail at 12 and the task of each tent team was to
find as many of the 17 Sculptures on the trail as
possible.

Working from a
numbered map they had to note down the number and
description of each Sculpture found 2 points for
each correct description. They were given until
1.45 to find as many as possible, most teams were
back by 2pm but the two Scout teams got lost!! and
did not get back until 2.15 they lost points for
this. Tent 3 won with 13 points, tent 1 had 12 points,
tent 2 had 7, the Scouts only got 3 points!
We then went back
to Beaver Lodge and had a ploughman’s lunch, ham
cheese rolls and pickled onions. After lunch there
was a grand litter pick around the site with each
team gaining points for the amount of litter collected.
We then had the end of camp ceremony, Akela thanked
the leaders and helpers. The points from the Spare
Time Activities were added to the score sheet and
the result was a draw with Tents 1 3 equal first
followed by Tent 2 and then the scout tents. Everyone
then loaded their bags into the mini bus and we
left for Bracknell, after a brief loo stop we all
arrived back at HQ at about 6.15pm.
